Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It works by killing the bacteria that cause infections. Antibiotics like ciprofloxacin do not work for colds, influenza, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when not needed increases the risk of getting an infection later that may resist antibiotic treatment.
